2008 Napa Valley Syrah,
When made from the right terroir by the right winemaker, Syrah can offer a magical experience unmatched by most wine grapes. With the 2008 Napa Valley Syrah from the famous Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, Stéphane has tapped into the grape’s boundless potential to craft an elixir of ravishing beauty and unyielding strength. Certainly the best Syrah we’ve ever made, this wine benefits from the alchemy of carefully blending two different blocks of vines – one with the small, tight clusters giving structure and concentration, the other with looser, fuller clusters giving generous and luscious fruit – to create pitch-perfect balance and dizzying complexity. Coombsville’s cool climate and the vineyard’s high elevation offer the wine a fresh, vibrant, elegant quality that brings a smile to even the most jaded palate.
Aromatic in the extreme, the 2008 Napa Syrah explodes from the glass like a springtime bouquet, offering an array of wildflowers melded with sweet ripe mulberry and raspberry. Scents of roasted meats and finely ground white pepper add depth and give an earthy complexity to the pure, lifted nose. This Syrah boasts a richly textured mouthfeel that thoroughly coats the palate, but remains zesty and buoyant on the tongue thanks to plentiful acidity and an invigorating freshness. Flavors of peppery spice, fennel, and roasted blackberries form a concentrated core that expands with waves of succulence, climaxing in a long, vibrant finish of bing cherries wrapped in tobacco leaves. Undeniably deep and impeccably precise, our 2008 opens a window to the vast potential of New World Syrah.
